Why your website is losing you customers (and what to do about it)

By Kakmaklik

If you run a small business in South Africa, chances are your website is working against you. Not because it’s ugly — but because it’s slow, hard to use on a phone, and doesn’t make it easy for customers to contact you.

The three things that actually matter

1. Mobile speed

Over 70% of your potential customers will find you on their phone. If your site takes more than 3 seconds to load, more than half of them leave before they even see your homepage. Google’s own data confirms this.

Most small business websites in South Africa score between 20 and 50 on Google’s PageSpeed test. That’s failing. A properly built site should score 90+.

2. Trust signals

When someone lands on your site, they’re asking one question: “Can I trust this person with my money?” Your site answers that question in about 3 seconds.

Trust signals include:

  • A professional, modern design (not a 2015 template)
  • Real photos of your work
  • Customer testimonials with names
  • Your phone number and WhatsApp link visible without scrolling
  • An SSL certificate (the padlock in the browser)

3. Lead capture

Your website has one job: turn visitors into enquiries. That means a clear call to action on every page — a WhatsApp button, a quote form, or a click-to-call link. Not buried in the footer. Front and centre.

What you can do today

  1. Test your site — go to PageSpeed Insights and enter your URL. If you score below 70 on mobile, you have a problem.
  2. Check your phone — open your own site on your phone. Can you find your phone number in 2 seconds? Can you request a quote without scrolling?
  3. Ask a customer — send your website to a recent customer and ask them what they think. The honest answers will surprise you.
